National Science Foundation Awards $3.75M for Collaborative Research on AI Driven Cyber-Manufacturing of Quantum Material Architectures

Computer Science Professor and Director of the Data Science & Cybersecurity Center (DSC2) Danda B. Rawat, Ph.D. is part of a team of researchers working to develop data science and artificial intelligence driven cyber-manufacturing of quantum material aimed at exploring the integration of artificial intelligence and cyber manufacturing towards future manufacturing for quantum materials. The research is led by Harvard University, in collaboration with Howard University and the University of Southern California, and is funded by a five-year $3.75M Future Manufacturing Research Grant from the National Science Foundation.

“Together, the team will work to improve cyber physical operations using data science and data analytics based robust communication, computing, and control operations, and advance the field of artificial intelligence-driven cyber-manufacturing process for quantum materials,” said Rawat.

This Future Manufacturing Research Grant is to develop a transformative Future Manufacturing platform for quantum material architectures using a cyber-manufacturing approach, which combines artificial intelligence, robotics, multi-scale modeling, and predictive simulation for the automated and parallel assembly of multiple two-dimensional materials into complex three-dimensional structures.

Leveraging the fine-grained cyber physical systematic approaches that enable future production of high-quality, custom quantum material architectures for broad and critical applications, this Future Manufacturing platform supports continued U.S. leadership in technology development. The research in cybermanufacturing is integrated with innovative educational programs for cross-disciplinary training of scientists and engineers, including women and underrepresented minorities, in advanced cyber-manufacturing, artificial intelligence and quantum structures as well as engaging the public in future manufacturing concepts.

“Since joining Howard University in 2016, Dr. Rawat's research activities have had a tremendous impact on our computer science program and college. Dr. Rawat's most recent award from​ the National Science Foundation will enable him and his collaborators to continue to build on their efforts to customize future manufacturing for quantum materials. Through his funded research and dedicated high-quality classroom instruction, Dr. Rawat is creating opportunities for our students to become leaders in game-changing technical areas, such as machine learning, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, which are in great demand in industry and government,” commented Dean Anderson.

The NSF's Future Manufacturing Program is a cross-directorate program supported by NSF’s Directorates for Engineering (ENG), Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), Biological Sciences (BIO), Education and Human Resources (EHR), Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS), and Social, Behavioral, and Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE), the Office of International Science and Engineering (OISE) and the Office of Integrative Activities (OIA).
